Canary Wharf is a thriving and vibrant business district with a wide range of shops, restaurants, cinemas, pubs and wine bars, as well as healthcare and leisure facilities and an extensive arts and events programme. With its spectacular riverfront setting and ultra-modern towers, Canary Wharf is London's newest financial and entertainment centre.
In design terms, Canary Wharf is one of the most highly specified urban area in the world. For attention to detail both on the buildings and in the streetscape, it is virtually impossible to find a contemporary comparison. Formerly the West India Docks, this 78 acre site is one of the largest civil engineering projects ever undertaken.
Canary Wharf is planned on a grand scale, yet with meticulous attention to detail. Careful attention has been given to the provision of public open spaces, including parks, squares and promenades. The estate is so called because when in use as a dock, many of the imports were from the Canary Islands.
The vision of Canary Wharf is now a reality. Leading international companies enjoy the highest quality buildings, facilities and infrastructure within London's newest business district. Rivalling London's traditional financial centre, The Square Mile, Canary Wharf contains the UK's three tallest buildings, 1 Canada Square, commonly known as the Canary Wharf Tower, HSBC Tower, and Citigroup Centre. The 800ft tower, 1 Canada Square, is the tallest building in Britain, and one of the tallest in Europe. Canary Wharf tenants include major banks, such as HSBC, Citigroup and Barclays, as well as major newspaper firms, including The Independent, Reuters, and the Daily Mirror.
With 80,000 people living and working in Canary Wharf, it is not surprising that all the top names in retailing are here, from John Lewis and Waitrose to Carluccio's. The environment is particulary safe and relaxing and is surrounded by excellent waterside restaurants and bars with great views. Its riverside location features river bus stopping points, for added convenience.
Nearby stations are Canary Wharf DLR station, Canary Wharf tube station on the Jubilee Line and Heron Quays DLR station. London City Airport is only several miles further to the east and can be most easily accessed by regular bus connections or by taxi. The impressive Jubilee line is 10-20 minutes from London Bridge, Waterloo, Westminster, Bond Street and Baker Street.
